Botanical Name: Allium Cepa.
A biennial or triennial plant and is one of the most common vegetables.
The onion is native to Asia and in ancient times it was believed that onion gives power, being consumed by soldiers before going to battle.
In ancient China it was considered a symbol of intelligence.
The onion has a bulb in the soil and on the surface of the it, the leaves are cylindrical in shape. In the second year grows the stem on top of which there is a round inflorescence that contains numerous white flowers, of small size.

Onions have antimicrobial, antiinfective, antihelminitic, antibacterial, antiseptic, carminative, diuretic, expectorant, febrifuge, hypoglycemic, glandular, antithrombotic, vermifug, diuretic, hypotensive, stomachic, vasodilator and stimulate immunity.
Internally, onion is recommended for the treatment of edema, pleurisy, diarrhea, pericarditis, ascites, bronchitis, cough, diabetes, in hypercholesterolemia, arteriosclerosis, hypertension, thrombosis, anorexia, upper respiratory tract infections, asthenia, genitourinary infections, prostatitis, rickets, intestinal parasites, overuse, impotence, rheumatic diseases.
In external use, onions are indicated for abscesses, panartists, dental neuralgia, pyoderma, burns, frostbite, furuncule, stomatitis, wounds, freckles.
Precautions and contraindications
In patients with gastritis [irritable bowel, fertility colitis or onion intolerance, with aggravation of the condition, the dose is reduced to the limit of supportability and gradually increases until the body becomes accustomed.
With crushed onion bulbs, daily friction can help to remove freckles, and selenium contains important action on hair, nails, and gives skin elasticity.
